Jim and I would like to give you all a Thanksgiving poem this week that we each picked out as our personal favorite.  Guess which one belongs to who?  :)

Giving Thanks

For the hay and the corn and the wheat that is reaped,
For the labor well done, and the barns that are heaped,
For the sun and the dew and the sweet honeycomb,
For the rose and the song and the harvest brought home --
Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving!

For the trade and the skill and the wealth in our land,
For the cunning and strength of the workingman's hand,
For the good that our artists and poets have taught,
For the friendship that hope and affection have brought --
Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving!

For the homes that with purest affection are blest,
For the season of plenty and well-deserved rest,
For our country extending from sea unto sea;
The land that is known as the "Land of the Free" --
Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving!

A Turkey Speaks

I have never understood
why anyone would
roast the turkey
and shuck the clams
and crisp the croutons
and shell the peas
and candy the sweets
and compote the cranberries
and bake the pies
and clear the table
and wash the dishes
and fall into bed
when they could sit back
and enjoy a hamburger.

~Author Unknown

We wish you all a bountiful and blessed Thanksgiving!

Food For Thought:

We got an e-mail this week from Susan Grimm that has some interesting information that we thought we should share with you.  Here is her e-mail with the enclosed link:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Patti, I thought I'd share with you this website. I have been making my own laundry soap for about a year now and I love it and it's so cheap! It works great with HE machines because it's low sudsing. Soap is easier on your skin as well. My favorite is recipe #1 in this site but I cut it in half. The only pain of it if you will is that at least for my HE machine, I dilute it in hot water shaking it up to get it to dissolve (it's a thick gel) before I put it into my machine since it doesn't agitate to break it up. My daughter uses it in her machine that agitates with no complaints. You can get all the ingredients at Linn's, although Walmart has Borax for much less. I use the FelsNaptha soap rather than the other kinds it tells you can use. You can't believe how cheap this is to make. I only use  1-2 Tablespoons a load with my soft water. You use more with hard water. Call me if you have any questions.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From my own experience, I had read in Dr. Hulda Clark's books some years ago about using 20 Mule Team Borax Powder as a less-toxic alternative for many cleaning items around the house including dish washing detergent, laundry soap and shampoo.  I personally tried it all by itself in my dishwasher (1 Tbsp or less) and for my laundry (1/2 cup for a full load) and found that it worked just great!  Here are a couple more links with more information:

Family Preparation:  Have your chimneys cleaned to prevent fires.

Spiritual Preparation:  Read "Life's Lessons Learned", by Elder Joseph B Wirthlin, Ensign, May 2007, p. 45.

Food For Thought:

With our main storage item this week being soup, and it being the season to enjoy some particularly wonderful squashes, we thought it would be fun to include some great squash soup recipes.  My daughter once surprised me with a delicious helping of butternut squash soup that had carrots, onions and allspice in it and I loved it.  She didn't use a recipe - she just threw it all in a pot and cooked it all together and it was really good (remember your food storage carrots and onions from the cannery?).  Butternut is used frequently, but any of the golden-fleshed winter squashes will work, including pumpkin.  Recently I had the pleasure of being in Melody Drew's kitchen and savoring the delicious aroma of a huge batch of pumpkin soup.  She said it also had onions, celery, potatoes, cream and allspice (yum!).  So here are some links to a few for you to check out and/or come up with your own to warm your family's fall meals with:

Spiritual Preparation:  Read "Come to the Temple" by President Boyd K. Packer, Ensign, October 2007.  Plan to regularly attend the temple.

Food For Thought:

When we were in Saint George this week, we discovered another Health Food store that some of you may already know about but we were unaware of.  It is called "The Vitamin Cottage" and it is at 624 W. Telegraph in Washington, just north of Saint George (across the main street from Wal Mart).  The phone number is (435) 980-1100.  It's been there for about 2 1/2 years and if you haven't ever shopped there we suggest you drop in when you're in the area.

It is somewhat similar to our own little Sunshine Nutrition here in Cedar City, but quite a bit larger and with a great selection.  They also have a very nice fresh organic fruit and vegetable section, holistic makeup and skin care products.  They have an entire refrigerated section just for a wonderful array of nuts to keep the oils in them fresh (a lot of commercial nuts are rancid from sitting out on shelves at room temperature).

If you do visit, I challenge you to walk out without buying at least a bag of their wonderful dehydrated mangoes or bananas (I bought both!).  With this food for thought in mind, I would like to give you a recipe for one of my favorite treats, but if you're going to make it you need a good blender or you can use a juicer without the screen or possibly a food processor (although I haven't tried that):

Banana Ice Cream

Ingredients:

Frozen Organic Bananas (peel bananas, chop into chunks, put into sandwich bags, throw into the freezer and freeze until firm - at least overnight - I prefer organic, they just taste better)

Unsulphured Blackstrap Molasses

Brazil Nuts (fresh, good quality, chopped into small chunks)
An alternate could be shredded coconut (also fresh and good quality) or if you can't eat or don't like either, raisins are also good.

So all you do is blend up your bananas into a frozen cream with just enough water to process it without it being too watery and putting in an ice cube or two helps it to be really cold like ice cream.  Then scoop out, put in a bowl with a tablespoon or two of molasses and sprinkle with the nuts or your favorite topping and enjoy!

This is a good substitute for folks who are lactose intolerant and can't eat regular ice cream.

Family Gear Box:  Hard candy, gum and any other special treat your family would like in an emergency.

Family Preparation:  Change the batteries in your smoke detectors and test them.

Spiritual Preparation:  Read Alma 32:28-43.  In your daily lives, strive to have faith in all things that you may reap the rewards of your faith.

Food For Thought:

With pumpkins of every shape and size spilling out of the fronts of the grocery stores this month, wouldn't it nice to have something to do with them besides carve faces on them and stick them on your porch?  Years ago when our kids were little, a friend gave us a fun seasonal recipe called "Dinner in a Pumpkin".  We will give you this recipe and a link to an alternate version and you choose which one you like best (I'm thinking the modern version is sounding really good so be sure to check it out).  It might even become a Halloween tradition in your family!

Dinner in a Pumpkin (contributed by Kathy Webster)

2 lbs. Hamburger
3 Eggs
1 Tbl Oil
1-1/2 Tbl Chopped Onion
1-1/2 tsp Salt
1 tsp Pepper
2 Cloves Garlic
2 tsp Oregano
1 tsp Vinegar
3/4 Cup Raisins
1/2 Cup Chopped Green Olives
1 Green Pepper Chopped
1-15 oz. Can Tomato Sauce

Brown hamburger, onion, green pepper and garlic in oil with the spices.  Add raisins, green olives, vinegar and tomato sauce.  In bowl, beat 3 eggs then add the hamburger mixture to the eggs.  Put the mixture into a small to medium sized pumpkin.  Bake 1 hour at 350 or until the flesh of the pumpkin is soft.  If you want to carve a face into the pumpkin, do it before you fill it, but don't cut all the way through to the inside.  Serve meat over macaroni or rice.

While we have the holidays on our minds, here is a fun Punch recipe that would be great at any of this season's parties:

As we mentioned on week 38, Sister Julie White has a year or more supply of wheat that she is looking to trade with someone for an equivalent amount of canned 30-year-shelf-life rice (either from the Cannery or someone like Provident Pantry).  However, we had an incorrect phone number.  So if you are interested and trying to contact her, the correct phone number is (435) 865-1520.

Food For Thought:

This week we'd like to highlight a great deal that we discovered at Lin's Supermarket.  On the end of an aisle right behind the checkstands you can find two different brands of Bottled Emergency Kits.  These are 32 oz. water bottles packed with such things as:

Whistle
Caribiner
Emergency Blanket & Poncho
LED Flashlight w/batteries
Hand/Body Warmer
Strike Anywhere Matches
Etc.

The regular price is $14.89 but they are on sale right now for $6.99 (over half off!)

Right around the corner next to those you can find complete personal boxed 72 hour kits for $44.99.  They also have Winter Emergency Roadside Kits for $27.99 and Hundred-Hour Candles for 2/$7.00 (reg. $4.79 ea.)

With the holidays coming around the corner, any of these items would make great gifts!

Spiritual Preparation:  Read "Wherefore, Settle This in Your Hearts", by Elder Larry W. Gibbons, Ensign, November 2006, p. 102.  We cannot keep one foot in the Church and one foot in the world.  Stay on the straight and narrow path.  No, stay in the middle of the straight and narrow path.  Don't drift, don't wander, don't dabble, be careful.

Food For Thought:

During this evening's General Women's Conference, President Dieter F. Uchtdorf gave us five "forget-me-nots" to remember in our life's journey.  So this week, we'd like to give you our own five "forget-me-nots" as you go through this year's Food Storage Program:

1.  Store according to your family's particular needs and preferences (so that you have a year's worth of food your family likes and will enjoy even in difficult circumstances).  Remember that if everyone was stressed they would want food they were familiar with.

2.  If you're buying what your family likes and eats regularly, you should be able to rotate it through your daily pantry and keep everything relatively current.

3.  Store a variety so that if you had to live on your food storage you would have more to serve your family than just wheat and milk.

4.  Don't forget to include the extras that add so much flavor and nutrition to meals such as spices, condiments, honey and molasses (did you know that one tablespoon of unsulphured Blackstrap Molasses contains 20% RDA of both calcium and iron?) ingredients for side dishes, vitamin tablets, and extra things that can be used for trading like sugar, salt, etc.

5.  Keep in mind that temperature extremes can drastically affect the shelf life of your food storage items.
