This week we'd like to highlight a great deal that we discovered at Lin's Supermarket.  On the end of an aisle right behind the checkstands you can find two different brands of Bottled Emergency Kits.  These are 32 oz. water bottles packed with such things as:

Whistle
Caribiner
Emergency Blanket & Poncho
LED Flashlight w/batteries
Hand/Body Warmer
Strike Anywhere Matches
Etc.

The regular price is $14.89 but they are on sale right now for $6.99 (over half off!)

Right around the corner next to those you can find complete personal boxed 72 hour kits for $44.99.  They also have Winter Emergency Roadside Kits for $27.99 and Hundred-Hour Candles for 2/$7.00 (reg. $4.79 ea.)

With the holidays coming around the corner, any of these items would make great gifts!

Spiritual Preparation:  Read the First Presidency Message in the July 2007 Ensign; "The Peril of Hidden Wedges" by President Thomas S. Monson.  Try to renew a friendship this week.

Food For Thought:

With the extremely wet spring we experienced this year in this area, you, like us, may have been swatting bugs and scratching bites lately.  Having personally gotten some really painful bites up on the mountain, and being sensitive to chemical bug repellents, we recently researched and found the following non-toxic herbal version which so far seems to be working well:

1/2 cup witch hazel
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
10 drops eucalyptus oil

Pour all the above into a spray bottle and shake.  This is a great item to have in your storage and 72-hour kits!

Here are a few sites that have their own slightly different versions of the above:

http://www.natural-soap-making.com/natural-bug-repellents.html
http://www.familyherbalremedies.com/herbal_insect_repellant.html
http://www.greenlifepages.com/green-tips/item/342-how-to-make-your-own-non-toxic

An added benefit to this recipe, believe it or not, is that it is also a natural remedy for the pain and itch of the bites you may already have.  Go to the site below to see this and a few other helpful remedies:

Car Kits:  Duct tape, electrical tape, tow strap and a couple of bungee cords.

Family Preparation:  Start a savings program or review your existing savings plan.  No matter how much you make or how much you have in savings already, you can save something for the future.  Pay tithing and then pay yourself - even if it is just a little.

Spiritual Preparation:  President Harold B. Lee gave some wonderful counsel that applies today.  He said, "Take some time ... each day to have a quiet hour ... an hour of prayerful meditations where you can tune in with God and discuss with him problems that are too much for human understanding, too great for human strength."

Food For Thought:

I was at the library this week picking up a few mysteries for my mom to read when I ran across a book by Susan Wittig Albert called "An Unthymely Death and Other Garden Mysteries" - a treasury of stories, herbal lore, recipes and crafts from Pecan Springs.  She has some fun recipes mixed in with her mildly amusing crime solving, one of them being the following using canned fruit:

Ruby's Applesauce Mint Bread

2 Cups Flour
3 tsp Baking Powder
1/2 tsp Baking Soda
1/2 tsp Nutmeg
1/2 tsp Cinnamon
1 Cup Slivered Almonds, Chopped
1 Egg Beaten
1 Cup Applesauce
3/4 Cup Firmly Packed Brown Sugar
1/4 Cup Vegetable Oil
1/4 Cup Chopped Fresh Mint (best with fresh, but if you must substitute, use 1 Tbsp dried)

Preheat oven to 350 Deg. F.
Sift the first five ingredients together, add almonds, and blend well.
In a separate bowl, combine egg, applesauce, brown sugar, and oil and stir to mix.
Add mint.
Add wet ingredients to dry, and stir just until blended (do not over mix).
Pour batter into two small greased loaf pans and bake for about 45 minutes.
Cool on rack.

Another interesting recipe comes from a lady named Kathy in Maine who gives us both the original recipe and her food storage version of the same thing both of which she says taste exactly the same:

Southern Fruit Cobbler (original recipe)

1 Cube of Butter or Margarine Melted
1 Cup Sugar
1 Cup Milk
1-1/4 Cup All Purpose Flour
1 tsp Baking Powder
1/2 tsp Baking Soda
1/4 tsp Salt
1-1/2 Cups Chopped Fresh Fruit
1/2 Cup Water

1.  Mix together melted butter and sugar.
2.  Add milk and stir well.
3.  Add flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.  Stir until well incorporated.
4.  Pour into a greased 8x8 in. pan.
5.  Spread chopped fresh fruit evenly over batter.
6.  Evenly pour 1/2 cup water over top.
7.  Bake at 350 for 50-55 minutes.

Southern Fruit Cobbler (food storage version)

8 Tbsp Butter Powder
1 Cup Sugar
1/4 Cup Powdered Milk
1/2 Cup All Purpose Flour
1 Cup Ground Whole White Wheat (white wheat has a lighter appearance and a milder taste than red wheat because the genes for bran color have been eliminated.  It also has the same nutritional composition as red wheat but is better for cakes and pastries.  1/2 cup of hard white wheat equals just under 1 cup of freshly ground flour.  It is also available at our Cannery).
1 tsp Baking Powder
1/2 tsp Baking Soda
1/4 tsp Salt
1 Cup Plus 2 Tbsp Water
1 - 30 oz. Can of Fruit, Drained.

1.  Mix together all of the dry ingredients.
2.  Mix in the water, stirring until all ingredients are well incorporated.
3.  Pour into a greased 8x8 in. pan.
4.  Spread fruit evenly over batter.
5.  Bake at 350 for 50-55 minutes.

One of the extra items on our list this week is duct tape.  Now, while I generally think of this as an item my husband would like to have in his toolbox, I have actually come across an application that we ladies might be interested in.  When you are sewing for yourself, altering your clothes or mending them, have you ever wished you could have a custom-made dress form that was your exact measurements to work on?  Well thanks to duct tape, believe it or not, now you can!  Click on the following link to go to an excellent site on how to make your own dress form for just a few dollars.  You can also go to Google, type in "duct tape dress form" and this site as well as several other good ones plus You Tube demos will come up to choose from.  You can even make these for your kids if you sew for them.  Apparently, unbeknownst to me, they even have duct tape with colorful designs that you can use to make them pretty - wow, pretty duct tape, who knew?

Car Kits: A couple of pairs of safety glasses and gloves for working on the car. Find your jack and tools to change a tire and check them out and learn how to use them.

Family Preparation: Pick the smallest debt listed last week and make a dedicated effort to pay it off. Apply any spare dollars to this goal. When it is paid off, apply its payment amount plus what the next smallest one requres and any spare dollars to pay off the next smallest one. Continue this plan until the Prophet's counsel to be debt free is accomplished.

Spiritual Preparation: Gather your family together for family prayer morning and evening. "Pray in your families unto the Father, always in my name, that your wives and children may be blessed." (3 Nephi 18:21)

Food For Thought:

Here's another option for long term canned meat storage - dehydrated meat. You can find an excellent selection at Emergency Essentials. Below is a snapshot of a page from their catalog, and you can also find this information on their website at http://www.beprepared.com/. This link has been added to the links section on the right side of the page for your convenience.

Spiritual Preparation: Read D&C 1:38. Strive to implement one of the priciples you heard in General Conference throughout this week.

Food For Thought:

Here is the third of our five-part series on Family Disaster Preparedness:

LESSON THREE:
"Preparedness Storage"
Begin thinking about 72 hours, then a month, then 6 months, and then a year.

President Spencer W. Kimball gave us this counsel regarding home storage: "We reaffirm the previous counsel the Church has always given, to acquire and maintain a year's supply - a year's supply of the basic commodities for us." "We encourage families to have on hand this year's supply; and we say it over and over and over and repeat over and over the scripture of the Lord where He says, 'Why call me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?'"

Prepare and pack your family's 72 hour emergency kit.

Emergency 72 Hour Kit

These are some suggested items:

  • Water - one gallon per person per day

  • Non-perishable packaged or canned food, preferably not items that need to be cooked.

  • Hard candy

  • A non-electric can opener

  • A change of clothing, rain gear, and sturdy shoes

  • Blankets or sleeping bag

  • First-Aid Kit and prescription medication

  • An extra pair of glasses

  • Battery-powered radio, flashlight, and plenty of fresh batteries

  • Credit cards, cash and gas

  • An extra set of car keys

  • An emergency family plan index card

  • Sanitary items, sanitary disposal container

  • Scriptures

  • Games, paper, pencil

  • Special items for infants, elderly, disabled (if this applies to your family)

Exercises:

a) Have every family member put together what they feel they need to have for 72 hours. Once they have done this, then discuss each item and determine if it is really necessary.

b) Have each family member list on paper what they think the whole family will need to store for a month. Have them guess costs and then discuss the totals they ahve come up with.

c) Get a family Yearly Food Storage quantity plan from your Ward Preparedness Leader. Once you have a food storage plan, discuss it with your family.

d) Decide the extra items your family wants and needs to make the storage complete.

Create a plan that will allow your family to attain your 72 hour kits, your one month kits, your 6 month kits and your years supply. Decide what you will need to do to accomplish this plan and then put into action your plan.
