Week 34

FOOD STORAGE TIP OF THE WEEK

Food Storage:  30 lbs. of Wheat or Flour

Extra Item:  30 lbs. of Beans

Family Gear Box:  A multi tool and a basic tool kit.

Family Preparation:  Practice a drill for each of your evacuation plans.  Identify storage area for your supplies, such as a closet along an inside wall or several heavy duty watertight garbage cans that can be stored outside.  If using outside storage, ensure that containers are weather and animal proof.

Spiritual Preparation:  Read Revelations 3:20.  Resolve to do your part to involve Christ in your life.

Food For Thought:

We are happy to announce that our local Cannery will be reopening next week for the coming season.  The Kanarraville Ward's scheduled canning session is the second Thursday of every month at 5:00pm.  If you are new in the ward, please feel free to come up and join us on September 8th!  The session lasts for about an hour and is a lot of fun.  Please show up at least 15 minutes early to put on your aprons and to fill out and turn in an order form.  We will be there and very happy to show you the ropes.

Meanwhile, in our continuing efforts to search out alternative sources for preparedness supplies, this week we would like to highlight the Lehi Roller Mills.  A historic facility located in the Salt Lake area, it is another possible source of bulk wheat, flour and baking mixes.  If you're going to be visiting the Salt Lake area for conference, vacations, visiting relatives, etc., we highly recommend you include it in your itinerary.  Although they don't do tours per se, they have an onsite store.  They don't ship the bulk items but do ship the smaller packaged mixes.  We stopped by a few years ago and bought several large storage buckets of red and white wheat.  We can personally recommend their hot cereal called Germade (like Cream of Wheat but with the germ of the wheat included, so it is more nutritious).  However, being a cracked grain cereal you'll want to use it within a couple of years as it doesn't keep forever like whole-grain wheat.  Their packaged mixes also make great gift ideas for the holidays.

We also had a chance to visit the Cedar City Farmer's Market this week.  It is held in the parking lot behind the Pastry Pub every Wednesday from 4pm to 7pm.  It was bustling with activity and people were lined up at several of the booths to buy locally grown fresh produce, much of which was grown without pesticides.  If you go, be sure to get there early for a good selection!  While there, we picked up the following flyer offering some great classes on preparedness:
